and so it begins…

Well, this is it. The first post of my new blog. I know you are just as excited about it as I am, whoever you are. Are you out there? Hello?

At any rate, I’m excited to have finally started this after a lot of talk (to myself, anyway). Mainly because this marks the first step in a new creative journey for me. I can’t tell you when or how it started, but the buds of my current obsession with photography are now in full bloom and it is slowly starting to take up more room in my brain than what I currently have room for in there.  I find myself staring for hours at forums and blogs. I go out and take photos instead of grade papers. I play with Lightroom instead of studying for grad school. I drool over lenses and camera bodies instead of shoes or nice snowboarding gear or fine housewares. It is because of this obsession that I find myself catching up with my real life responsibilities (and other loves) late at night, when I should be sleeping, or at times when I would rather be socializing.

So, this is officially a sort of test for me, to see if I have the chops to pursue this new adventure wholeheartedly. By day, I am a high school English teacher. By night, I am a grad student. And by any other time, I am a photographer, about as amateur as they come. Please comment on my work…I need all the feedback and guidance I can get!! =)

On a side note, here is the equipment I’ve managed to score in the last few months that have fueled my beginnings. Comments? Tips? Tricks? Advice? Throw it at me.

Canon Rebel T1i with battery grip- I love this camera. Although, of course, I wouldn’t mind a nice 5d, I’m still a teacher, so this will have to suffice for a while. It still takes great pictures!!

Canon 50mm 1.4 – Sweet lens. I love the creamy, smooshy bokeh and the tack sharp focus. Yum.

Canon 24-70 2.8L – Oh my oh my. I almost cried when I dropped the cash on this (used) one, but I love love love it. Did I mention I love it? So fun, heavy, and makes me feel all professional, even though I’m definitely not.

Canon 480EX flash with diffuser – I am a big fan of natural light whenever humanly possible, so I am still trying to figure out how to use this, period, let alone effectively. I need more practice, but so far I really like what it is capable of. Much better than the silly little pop-up flash on the Rebel.

And of course, I scored a really cute camera bag from Porteen Gear on Etsy. I love it! And I also love her blog, which is a mish mash of travel photography, musings, and tips. =)

So, it is with all this (expensive/awesome/heavy) crap that I hope my vision finds its way. Cheers to a new beginning!

I am SOOOOO excited for you, Megan!!! Oh yes, you are definitely on to something! You have that creative gene in you that you just can’t fight….I have it swirling around in me all the time. You never know where your creative process may lead you …..keep following it! The pictures are wonderful! I will keep checking your website. We just had a photographer speak at our art group meeting last week. It is amazing how many artists rely on photography to help them with design! Dave bought me a beautiful camera a few years ago….Nikon D40…and I have yet to take a basic photography class…it’s on my “to do” list! Congrats on your new venture…you go girl! Love ya!ReplyCancel

It sounds like you’ve gotten off to a great start as far as gear goes! Congratulations on taking a big step with this blog. I look forward to seeing how you progress–I’m still learning new things with each day after a year in business under my belt!

P.S. I almost went to school to be an English teacher. 🙂ReplyCancel
